Stage 20 of 20

Advanced Mental Math

The capstone stage: square numbers, estimate quickly, calculate simple percentages, and combine every technique you have learned into fluid, championship-level mental math.

What You'll Learn

  • Calculate perfect squares up to 15² mentally
  • Estimate sums, products, and quotients to check answers
  • Find 10%, 25%, and 50% of numbers rapidly
  • Combine all prior techniques in complex problems

Explanation

Perfect squares to memorize: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225. Notice the pattern in differences: +3, +5, +7, +9…

For 13²: think (10 + 3)² = 100 + 60 + 9 = 169. Or use the shortcut: 13 × 13 = 13 × 10 + 13 × 3 = 130 + 39 = 169.

10% of any number: move the decimal one place left. 10% of 240 = 24. Then 25% = half of half (÷4), and 50% = half.

Estimation: round numbers to friendly values, compute, then adjust. 49 × 21 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1000 (actual: 1029).

Final challenge: combine everything. (15² − 48) ÷ 7 = (225 − 48) ÷ 7 = 177 ÷ 7 ≈ 25.3. Work step by step.

Pro Tips

  • Square numbers ending in 5: the tens digit × (itself + 1), then append 25. 35² = 1225.
  • Always estimate before calculating — it builds number sense and catches errors.
  • Review Stages 1–19 monthly to keep foundational skills sharp.
