Two-Digit Plus Single (No Carry)

Combine your single-digit skills with place value. When the ones digit of the result stays below 10, addition is simply "add to the ones place."

Explanation

In 42 + 5, the tens digit (4) stays unchanged. Add 5 to the ones digit: 2 + 5 = 7. Answer: 47.

Think of the two-digit number as "forty-two," not "four-two." Adding five gives "forty-seven."

Break the problem aloud: "forty-two plus five… two plus five is seven… forty-seven." This trains your brain to hold place value.

If the ones sum would reach 10 or more, you need carrying — covered in the next stage. For now, only practice problems where ones stay single-digit.
